Lip enhancement, also known as lip fillers, lip injections, lip augmentation or lip enlargement, can be performed in various ways to improve the size and shape of the lips.
Lip augmentation can have an anti-ageing effect, balance asymmetry and reduce tiny vertical fine lines and lines around the mouth.
As discussed here, dermal fillers are clear gels made from Hyaluronic acid that lasts for a limited period of time. Lip fillers are designed specifically to allow natural integration into the delicate area of the lip. They can also shape, define and add projection and volume.
There are many factors to consider during a lip enhancement procedure. It may be that the patient requires a more defined vermillion border, perhaps they need some correction for asymmetry or maybe would just like a little more volume. It is also possible to lift the corners of the mouth when using dermal filler in the lip area which can have a rejuvenating effect. It may also be appropriate to fill areas around the lips when treating this area, such as smokers lines, marionette lines or nose to mouth lines.
Lip fillers are suitable for anyone that is concerned with the appearance of their lips and the appropriate treatment plan can be determined during your consultation with Anna.
A local anaesthetic cream can be applied prior to treatment which can reduce discomfort during treatment. The dermal fillers of choice at Anna Medical Aesthetics have a local anaesthetic called Lignocaine integrated within the product which can make the whole process more comfortable. Treatment times will vary but generally will be around 30 – 60 minutes.
The longevity of lip filler varies between individuals but generally will last around 9 – 12 months and it used to:
Personally, I wouldn’t treat you while you are pregnant or breastfeeding. This may seem a little harsh, but I would wait if it were myself. To the best of my knowledge, dermal fillers are not tested on pregnant or breastfeeding women, so there really is no safety data available. Since local anaesthetic is used for most filler injections, there is a risk it can get to your bloodstream and to your baby.
You will be able to carry on with your normal activities following treatment. It is not advised to do any heavy exercise and avoid UV exposure for 24 hours. We also advise trying to refrain from applying make-up following the procedure on the day of treatment. An ice-pack can also be applied to the area to reduce swelling. A full list of aftercare will be discussed on the day of treatment.
Following your procedure, it is more common than not to have swelling of the lips. This can take up to a week to completely subside but will generally reduce significantly after 24 – 48 hours. Applying ice packs to the area following treatment can help reduce this.
Despite efforts being made to avoid bruising, it can occur. If it does, it can take a week or two to completely disappear. Make-up can be applied to conceal it if needed, but ideally not on the day of treatment to avoid the risk of infection. Arnica gel/cream can also be applied to the area to help reduce the appearance of bruising.
A full list of possible side effects will be discussed with you during your consultation.
It is best to discuss your needs, expectations and suitability for treatment during a face-to-face complementary consultation. Anna can assess your facial anatomy and make tailored recommendations to achieve the best possible outcome.
